All this together with the Mediterranean climate characterized by warm summers and mild winters make this island a favorite vacation destination.

History and tradition

The island of Rab and its eponymous town center, or the old town, are one of the best preserved and most beautiful medieval urban cores on the Adriatic. Rab reached its peak during the rule of the Venetians, when the core of Rab with the port stood out as one of the most important trade centers in the Mediterranean and the meeting point of eastern and western trade. At that time, the island had 10,000 inhabitants, half of whom were in the old town. Throughout its rich history, Rab was also a Roman municipality, diocese and the Christian center of this part of the Adriatic.

The Rab Fair is held every year and is the largest medieval festival in Croatia.

The average annual air temperature is 17°C, in summer even 26°C.

The old town is adorned with a recognizable view from its 4 bell towers.

The Church of St. Justine and its bell tower are the only ones built in a sumptuous Baroque style.

According to tradition, St. Christopher – the patron saint of Rab – on May 9, 1075 saved the island from the Normans and that day is celebrated as the Day of the City of Rab.

The Kalifront Peninsula with its Dundo Forest makes it one of the largest holm oak communities in Europe.

The Romans gave Rab the epithet “Felix Arba”, which highlighted the merits, influence and significance of the city for the Roman Empire.

The epithet “Felix” was not common and was given to rare Roman provinces, such as Carthage in Africa.

Saint Marin, the founder of the oldest republic in the world – the Republic of San Marino – was born in Lopar on the island of Rab.

The largest and most famous beach on the island is Paradise Beach – an uninterrupted two-kilometer-long sand empire.

The Kampor concentration camp was one of the largest camps on the Adriatic under fascist Italy.

The day of the liberation of Rab from Italian and later German occupation is celebrated on April 12.

Rab cake is a traditional dessert that has been prepared since the 12th century, when it was first served to Pope Alexander III in 1177. during his visit to the island.
